No Bluesky, 0.3% User Level Blocking Is Not Sufficient

The fact that the White House has been blocked by a 100,000 users on Bluesky is now being trumpeted by tech media.

Let's understand with a user base of 35 million, this means that 34,900,000 users are NOT blocking the account.

Centralized 'mediated' networks like #Bluesky that rely on users to safeguard their accounts can never deliver the level of protection 'federated' networks like the Fediverse provide.

@mastodonmigration

we differ here.

Trump should be able to have a website etc on the new network, but it shouldn't be up to any person or company to decide who he gets to spam. nor should every user have to block spam from him themselves. and finally, the incentives are shit. they shouldn't be paying for him to reach lots of people nor should his presence be a potential boon to their bottom line.

real decentralization with balanced moderation solves these problems.

Feel like there may be actual agreement. Because Bluesky is not decentralized and federated (despite their rhetoric) there is no place for users to go where they can trust their network moderation in line with their wishes, so they are left to fend for themselves. As you say, true federation solves this problem, but that is not what Bluesky provides them.

The above quoted post uses the example of keeping burglars out of town (federation) vs. installing home security (mediation). Another useful analogy is trying to keep your home clean after roaches have infested inside the walls.

The bottom line is that once this rot takes hold, because the administration of the network is not actively engaged in rooting it out, there is nothing individual users can do to isolate themselves from the contagion.

What is ironic and troubling is that this is diametrically opposed to the case that #Bluesky CEO Jay Graber layed out in her 'No Ceasars, you can fork off!' charm offensive earlier this year.

Of course, the truth is she was right then, user level blocking is an insufficient remedy when a network becomes infested.

@mastodonmigration on Mastodon it would be like someone dressed like Hamburglar being chased down the street and out of town by furries, to the Yakety Sax (Benny Hill) music 😁
