A childhood full of explosions and air raids is changing Oleksandra’s little brothers.
As with many #Ukrainian children, the violence is fueling anger, shaping the way they speak, their fears, and their worldview.

It was long past midnight. The ground was shaking with every explosion, each one growing closer than the last.
Oleksandra couldn’t help but shake and cover her head, afraid that her eardrums would burst from the deafening sound of missiles destroying her neighborhood.
Oleksandra’s family was holding on to each other, crowding their tiny corridor, too small for all five of them. By March 2023, they had learned to shelter from danger within their apartment’s thick, blank hallways, but no walls could protect them from fear.
Vova, one of her two younger brothers, was weeping, scared and exhausted by a sleepless night.
“Tell me, what do you want for your next birthday,” Oleksandra’s mother said, hugging the twins.
After a few long minutes, he took a breath to shout what shocked the, all:
“I want a tank to shoot and kill all Kat**ps!”
