Third spruce tree on the left

For those out of the Loop:

#Google, #Meta, Microsoft, any of the tech companies who provide "portals" to news and content, scrape this content and shove it in a feed that they have control over (obstensibly based on your "habits" and "preferences"). The portal keeps the $ad.revenue$ they pad the content with. The news agency: $0 unless the viewer clicks-thru.

The Canadian Government, in defense of #Canadian news producers, said they had to pay up.

Google said yes (eventually)

Meta/Facebook said "NO". The end result is that on FB/Insta/Threads/MSgr, you attempt to paste a link to a Canadian news tv/radio/web anything, you get a polite message telling you to pound sand and to blame the Canadian Government.

Google pays $100M/year to Canadian news outlets. It made $100Bn net on $350Bn of revenue.

Meta made $62Bn on $165Bn of revenue. They would pay probably half of what Google does.

Sure, what 3/4 of our major news orgs are owned by American conglomerates (that's a whole DIFFERENT problem), but for that 1 (TorStar) and all the smaller ones, a share of that $150M would mean a massive difference.
