#HipHopAdvent 4: 1982
The Cold Crew – Rappin’ Christmas https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5b8ETzdaz3g
The hiphop DJ, originally, had been a New York transplant of Jamaica’s soundsystem DJ. By the early 80s, recorded hiphop was still rap performed over a live instrumentation disco instrumental, but this is a very early track where the Jamaican influence in hiphop is audible in the rap. It is also the first (and only?) Christmas song to feature the word “Reaganomics” — this in the same year that Grandmaster Flash’s The Message was released; rap lyrics became political real fast in 1982.
