Oooooh exciting update: I’ve finally made the jump to Proton and I’m feeling pretty excited about it. After a ton of research (and a little trial‑and‑error), I’ve decided that this platform will be perfect to help me leave Google behind and continue to boycott the USA.

For those who don't know, Proton is a service based in Switzerland (great privacy laws and not subject to draconian US snooping). They encrypted everything end‑to‑end, and they have an entire suite of products: Mail, VPN, Drive, Calendar, Password Manager!

🍁 For my fellow #BoycottUSA peeps, Proton’s privacy standards line up nicely with Canada’s own data‑protection expectations.
They even have French‑language support for those in Québec, and billing works smoothly in CAD.

If you do want to give it a try, they have a free tier! But if you want to commit, you can use my link and grab $20 off your first bill: https://pr.tn/ref/A4WTDR7V

@jace Beware that the Proton CEO appears pro MAGA. I think Proton even left Fedi after hard backlash.

@jace I also really like it. Their newsletter unsubscribe (and purge) feature is really smart. Honestly, I think @fastmail is slightly better as a product but it's less of a suite (with spreadsheets etc.). What is really annoying and borderline IMO is that Proton runs upsell campaigns within the UI on paying (!) customers.

@jace This is interesting - are you able to import over your Gmail to Proton?

@chad Yes! They have some importing features. I was able to forward my Gmail (until I delete it later on), a one-time import for your messages, contacts, calendars. I was also able to use Takeout to move Photos and Drive into Proton Drive, and an import function to move to Proton Authenticator.

@chad @jace I hope Jace remembers the answer. I’ve been with Proton a couple of years now and don’t remember a port-my-data option. But I sure do like Proton a lot more than Google. Plus that part of my data is no longer controlled by Americans.

@chad @jace I switched over last year. Have the dual plan. Yes you can import your email to Proton. The only issue I have is transferring my files from iCloud to Proton Drive it’s not that it can not done just needs to be streamlined.

@chad @jace

Have done so years ago.
To the extent I rarely use my Telus/google accounts.
