The next #PrinterSolstice2526 prompt is expression so I am working on a portrait of one of the great 20th century mathematicians, Olga Ladyzhenskaya (1922-2004). She made immense contributions to the study of partial differential equations, particularly with the Navier-Stokes equations and fluid dynamics and she was brave and kind in her personal life, 🧵

Green Lino block in progress is mostly carved and shows a young Olga Ladyzhenskaya in profile, from the shoulders up. She’s wearing a shirt and jacket with her hair up. She’s facing some text, carved in reverse, with some words in Russian and mathematics. The text explains this is the system of Navier-Stokes equation, initial and boundary conditions. Below her is a diagram of laminar flow eddying into turbulence.

fighting to protect those around her in the authoritarian USSR even though the secret police had arrested and killed her math teacher father as an “enemy of the people.”

This block includes text from her 1958 paper on the Navier-Stokes equation (with it and other expressions in reverse of course) and a diagram showing how smooth laminar flow in a fluid which hits an obstacle begins displaying eddies upon eddies until it reaches turbulence.

It is unfortunately topical to be thinking about authoritarian regimes who use secret police to snatch people up and kill them in custody but also the example set by those who never gave up and fought to protect their communities.

I have been struggling to print this due to the cold snap and the extreme dryness of the air in my studio but I am going to try again today.
