There is no single central #Signal server. Signal uses #AWS cloud, plus Google Cloud, Microsoft Cloud and Cloudflare, all under US legislation. If any of these clouds goes down or becomes otherwise problematic, chatting degrades or fails.

for everyone curious about the #Signal situation - there were DNS issues on AWS (with DynamoDB which Signal uses for their AWS deployment being the most severely hit). users whose clients were talking to the GCP server were not affected, hence why the outage was mostly seen in Europe and Asia but not in America.
users have slowly been rerouted to the GCP server, hence why the service came back to different people at different times.
there'll probably be a re-rerouting once the issue resolves.

While I like #Signal, it shows, again, how vulnerable centralized services are.

I'm a techie. I recently tried Matrix. I find it so clunky. Non-techies will hate it and abandon it. I'll keep pushing Signal to family and friends.

Unpopular opinion: the silver lining in server outages is that they pull the curtain & reveal some hard truths about who is really behind some services we use... especially stuff we think are alternatives to Big Tech (spoiler: maybe they aren't).
