Oh, would you look at those poor poor people in France? Suffering living in caves because they have a car free neighborhood .
Oh the travesty. They have to walk. They have to walk. Oh dear, they don’t have to spend any money on gas to go out to their favorite café. How they must suffer their backwards, primitive life, eating berries, and living in caves.
Here's an updated view of the 12-month running mean global temperature, which is a simple metric that provides insight on climate change and climate variability. I would expect this to begin increasing again later on in 2026/2027.
Graphic from global climate indicators: https://zacklabe.com/climate-change-indicators/
And here's the number of temporary displaced people due to weather-related disasters.
While the time series is short and I also didn't bother to set it into relation of population growth,
the societally relevant impact of Zack's "Global Mean Anything" is palpable in the years with low numbers of displacements: These lower numbers are on the rise.

If you haven’t watched this before, you should. The brilliant Carl Sagan testifying before the United States Congress in 1985 on #ClimateChange.
We should have listened then. Will we now?
Climate change isn’t an on & off switch. It’s an exponential dial. https://youtu.be/Wp-WiNXH6hI?si=pWQ4VgYpSkA9NQx5

The war is going badly. A feature of the global climate system as large as the AMOC is not something that can be changed on a dime. It is after all, slightly larger than a Titanic.
Europe will face next very different climate regime as it falls apart, which it seems to be doing. Is your community preparing for this shift?
EV are not going to matter so much as being able to support yourself without the global economy.

The principal reason why I really love this channel which is produced in India is that it is a completely different window onto the world by showing us outside of India, the sort of things that communities in India are doing in response to climate change to build resilience and to choose different economic pathways different from the ones the global economy tells us we can only choose from. They also do a significant amount of climate reporting.

🤯 How the heck is it a blizzard in Minnesota and boiling in Arizona? Geezus! #ClimateChange

The summary here is that nitrogen availability in the environment from all sources has been incorrectly modeled.
Bio available nitrogen for plants subject to higher CO2 levels has been both over and underestimated. This means that climate models do not track well the level of sequestration. And the channel goes on to describe the research in this area.
Ahh March. The (now) traditional start of summer in southern Arizona.

I can't talk about backup power without talking about solar, because unlike the brittle and expensive gas supply chain, the sun just relentlessly keeps coming up every morning... which is very convenient for recharging your battery: https://susankayequinn.com/2025/04/solar-how-to-get-started-and-why-you-should.html

I also recommend folks check out (and support!) Solar United Neighbors-- they're a US advocacy group that helps navigate issues around solar install regulations and they run solar co-ops to get cheaper pricing by having people go solar together!
After I wrote up the general backup power options post, my kiddo had to evacuate from the LA wildfires. So I found myself doing another round of calculations and seeing if the new Jackery I'd got them would run the air purifier (answer: yes).

Cocoa beans quadrupled in price because a series of droughts and floods since 2020 destroyed the plants and made surviving trees vulnerable to pests " in Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire, which, combined, produce 70% of the world’s chocolate ".
By late 2025, the trees recovered and cocoa shortage now eases.
Prices might follow but not immediately because previous harvests were sold at higher prices.
Alternative locations in Ecuador or Indonesia are also prone to more extreme weather events thanks to Exxon's lies which made fossil fools of us.
What's more: small plantations get abandoned because people move into cities to look for less volatile, permanent jobs.

Sudden urbanisation driven by climate change? We've seen in Syria what that leads to.
Haven't bought chocolate since it surged past 15€ per kilo = a doubling some time in 2024.

The U.S. is stepping back from global climate policies at the very moment the global clean energy transition is accelerating.
Christiana Figueres, former UN climate leader and architect of the Paris Agreement, explains why this attempt to double down on fossil fuels is economically and technologically out of step with the rest of the world — and why it won’t stop the broader shift already underway. Instead, it leaves the U.S. trailing behind; and catching up in a global clean energy race is far harder than leading it.

@kathhayhoe there are many examples of companies that have ignored changing markets and doubled down on a dying product or technology. It always ends badly. I suspect it a combination of a lack of imagination and timidness or maybe pigheadedness that blinds them to the risks.
