Vertical video clip of a person speaking at Albuquerque City Council on Monday, March 2. They are wearing a grey base ball cap, grey sweatshirt with hot air balloons on it, and have pale skin and a light brown beard. They say the following: I was talking with a neighbor of mine this morning who's a veteran, and he was reminding me that, you know, Burqueños look out for each other, a thing that I, I try to live by and, and, and, and kind of work by, and, right now our city council is making choices that seem to help the wealthy and the well connected over the hardworking families in my neighborhood in particular, but certainly in, in other districts as well. I'm in District 6. And this council's voted 5-4, to, to block protections would have stopped junk fees for renters, you know. A couple of other votes that people have mentioned blocking the ability to build a casita or a duplex, you know, for families that might wanna take care of an aging parent, etc. and I think we need to look out for each other. I today I see a lack of leadership, on this council. I see a messy and kind of a divided set that votes against things that the people want, and, you know, I see decisions that are made behind closed doors, and I, I think we need to make some change for that because that, that really just does not represent the people well. They say the following: I want to start with the outburst that we heard earlier, perhaps not everybody who's watching the, the, the meeting on, on YouTube or Zoom might have, might have caught it, but a gentleman used a racist slur, and I wasn't particularly surprised because I sat behind him in the previous meeting and he used the same slur, and I think he actually may have done the exact same thing 3 meetings back. I'd have to go look. And you know I appreciated Madam President, the statement that you shared at the beginning of this meeting and I guess I was a little surprised to see no one else on council after the same repeated behavior happened just stand up and say you know this really isn't acceptable, this isn't really within our values, and so I think in particular Vice President Champine and and Madam President yourself could have just stood up there and reaffirmed that and so I'm gonna use just a a touch of my time if, if it's OK to say. That, especially to, to folks who are new to this chamber, to our, our young folks and our kids, to our immigrant communities and families, that you absolutely belong here. This is the people's house. We are glad you're here. I'm glad you're here, and I'm grateful that you're using your voice, and please do continue to do so. We all, we all belong here. This is the people's business. It's the people's house.
