The Montreux/Berlin Concerts is a double album by American jazz saxophonist Anthony Braxton recorded in 1975 and 1976 and released on the Arista label.

The Allmusic review by Scott Yanow awarded the album 5 stars stating "the interplay between these masterful musicians (making expert use of space and dynamics) sometimes borders on miraculous... this music is highly recommended and by itself demonstrates the greatness and uniqueness of Anthony Braxton's music" - Wikipedia

Tetterettet by ICP Tentet, released on Instant Composers Pool in 1977.

Recorded in 1977, the Instant Composers Pool’s Tetterettet is the first classic of the band’s larger incarnations. Assembled out of elements recorded live in Uithoorn, Utrecht, and the band’s home base of Amsterdam, with Misha Mengelberg using a cut-and-paste collage method akin to Teo Macero’swork with Miles Davis, the record features an all star lineup that added three leading lights of free music: bassist Alan Silva and saxophonists John Tchicai and Peter Brötzmann. In this period, Brötzmann made the long train trip from Wuppertal, Germany, to A’dam on a weekly basis to rehearse with ICP, bassist Silva coming in from Paris...

Edned Tuesday and welcomed wednesday with Pipedream by Mark Charig With Keith Tippett and Ann Winter, released on Ogun in 1977.

Marcello Carlin wrote on his Ogun label blog (link below):

Charig is best known for his work in Keith Tippett's sundry groups and the Tippett-adjacent models of Soft Machine and King Crimson, as well as the Brotherhood of Breath and its various offshoots ; he has also been one of the core members of the London Jazz Composers' Orchestra for over half a century. ...he was a member of a hard Left jazz-rock agitprop band named Redbrass, whose personnel briefly included a young singer named Annie Lennox. Yet Pipedream is one of only a very few records to be issued under his name..

Pipedream, however, is a major statement. Wanting to get away from That London, Charig and Tippett drove to ..Bristol..

Spirits In Fellowship by Vinny Golia, released on Nine Winds in 1977.

Alright, so I finally sat down with Vinny Golia’s Spirits In Fellowship — yeah, the 1977 one, his actual debut. Released on his own Nine Winds label, which, let’s be real, is kinda punk rock for jazz in ‘77. Recorded in Venice, CA. October ‘77. Smells like patchouli and rebellion. And man, this thing? It’s not background music. You don’t put this on while folding laundry unless you wanna stab your socks with a fork. First off — the lineup. John Carter on clarinet? YES. Roberto Miranda on bass? Double yes. Alex Cline on drums? Okay triple yes. And then Vinny himself doing… like… everything else? Tenor, baritone, piccolo, flutes, recorders, sho (what even IS a sho? I had to look it up), percussion. Dude’s basically a one-man woodwind circus...

Soran-Bushi, B.H. is an album by saxophonist Billy Harper recorded in 1977 and released on the Japanese Denon label

"Japanese only release by Billy Harper released in 1978. Harper tears it up as usual on the first track. Just wailing. Fantastic, fiery playing. The rest of the band supports him on all fronts as well. We have Everett Hollins on trumpet, Harold Mabern on piano, Greg Maker on bass and Billy Hart and Horacee Arnold on drums.

On the second tune Harper plays a lovely solo piece that displays a more subtle approach while still mesmerizing with fast runs baked in.

The title tune on the second side is a Japanese work song, sung by fishermen on the northern island of Hokkaido since the Meiji era. It takes up the whole side and is my favorite tune on the album.

If you’re a fan of Harper this one is a must. Highly recommended"

Point of No Return is the debut album by the jazz group the World Saxophone Quartet released on the Moers Music label in 1977.

The album features a live performance by alto saxophonists Julius Hemphill and Oliver Lake, tenor saxophonist David Murray and baritone saxophonist Hamiett Bluiett. It was recorded at the 6th International New Jazz Festival in Moers in June 1977.

Writer Gary Giddins commented: "little on... Point of No Return suggested serious absorption in exploring the potential of a renegade sax section (Murray's hurly-burly 'Scared Sheetless' pointedly fills most of the play time), and that little bit was by Hemphill, who always preferred group conception to workaday nightly improvisation." - Wikipedia

The Cave Of Winds by Tony Malaby's Sabino, released on Pyroclastic Records in 2022

Free Jazz Collective wrote:

Tony Malaby has not escaped the notice of the Free Jazz Collective. Last August we posted a fine review by Stef Gijssels’ of Malaby’s Turnpike Diaries. With live jazz music shut down tight, Malaby convened a series of performances under a New York turnpike bridge. You can find a nice, luxuriously long clip here. I love the oblivious cars passing behind the group and the young man who pauses to dance. As I understand it, Malaby came to refer to this venue as the cave of winds...

Cave of Winds opens with a short Malaby solo. Slowly the wind picks up, bringing a nice percussive thump from the bass, a flute-like melody from the guitar, and some slither from the drums. Like a string quartet, it is divided into sections...

Hommage / Vier Fäuste Für Hanns Eisler by Duo Goebbels/Harth, released on FMP in 1977

The Duo Goebbels/Harth (1975–1988)—combining German composer, music-theatre director and keyboardist Heiner Goebbels and German composer, multi-media artist and saxophonist Alfred 23 Harth—became famous for its adaptation of and departure from European composers, especially Hanns Eisler, implemented in a provocatively fresh manner into structured free improvisations and deploying content from areas beyond music. The duo was nicknamed the “Eisler brothers” by music critic W. Liefland. They later also experimented with different genres and sound collages, including electronic devices... - Wikipedia

An excellent early album from the underrated Bob Degen. Why didn't he ever record anything for ECM? In my opinion, he fits their aesthetic perfectly. Interestingly, on this album, the bass is played by none other than Manfred Eicher himself! Additionally, it's worth noting that the liner notes are authored by Florian Fricke, in which he tries to interpret the phenomenon of free jazz.
