Mobile Updates

Spent my birthday improving Inkwell’s mobile experience and it finally feels a lot closer to where it needs to be. New navigation, swipe gestures, pull-to-refresh, and better reading on small screens are all live, with a few auth issues still being worked through.…

The current state of the web assumes that the reader is an adversary to be trapped and monetized.

When a news website forces you through three dismissive actions just to read a headline, they are burning your cognitive budget before delivering any value. You are greeted by a cookie banner taking up the bottom 30% of your screen, a "Subscribe!" modal dead center, an autoplaying video pinned to the corner and a prompt begging to send you push notifications.

A look at modern news websites. How programmatic ad-tech, huge payloads and hostile architecture destroyed the reading experience.

Or, you know, like if your star #ux person threatens to quit or the PM has a stick up their butt unless you "hide the controls that are inactive", then make it apparent that "we've hidden something here, click / hover to find out what" - I can think of half a dozen clever ways to do this.

@tezoatlipoca your reasons are sound from the UX standpoint, but the solution can use some work.

As part of the development team, if you agree to something and then sneakily do something else, you’ll will get yourself and the rest of the team in trouble.

I suggest that you point out the issue using relevant sources (you may not be in charge of UX) and negotiate that the suggestion can be carried out as a refactor or quick fix.
