#Trump said #US financial #aid to #Colombia would be cut off & details about the new #tariffs would be unveiled Monday, but it was not clear what funding Trump was referring to.
Colombia was once among the largest recipients of US aid in the Western Hemisphere, but the flow of money was suddenly curtailed this year by the shuttering of #USAID, the US govt's #humanitarian arm.
Colombia currently pays 10% tariffs on most imports to the US, the baseline level Trump imposed on many countries.
"Daniel Garcia-Pena, #Ambassador of #Colombia in the United States of America, has been recalled for consultations by President Gustavo #Petro & is now in Bogota," the Colombian foreign ministry said. "In the coming hours the national government will inform of the decisions taken."
#Petro, who can be as vocal on social media as his American counterpart, rejected Trump’s accusations & defended his work to fight narcotics in #Colombia, the world’s largest exporter of cocaine.
“Trying to promote peace in Colombia is not being a drug trafficker,” Petro wrote. He suggested that #Trump was being deceived by his advisers, described himself as “the main enemy” of drugs in his country & said Trump was being “rude & ignorant toward Colombia.”

Colombia's foreign ministry said early on Monday the country has recalled its #ambassador from the #UnitedStates, after #Trump said he would raise #tariffs on Colombia & stop all #aid payments to the South American nation, in a feud that stems from the US #military bombing boats Trump claims are transporting drugs.

In a social media post, #Trump referred to #Petro as “an illegal drug leader” who is “low rated & very unpopular.” Trump warned that Petro “better close up” drug operations “or the United States will close them up for him, & it won’t be done nicely.”
Later in the day, Trump told reporters that #Colombia has “no fight against drugs” & “they are a drug manufacturing machine” with “a lunatic” for a president. He said that he would announce new #tariffs Monday.
Defense Secretary #PeteHegseth also announced the latest US strike on a vessel that was allegedly carrying “substantial amounts of narcotics.”
He said the vessel was associated with a Colombian rebel group — the National Liberation Army, or #ELN — that has been in conflict with #Petro’s government. He did NOT provide any evidence for his assertions, but he shared a brief video clip of a boat engulfed in flames after an explosion on Friday.
