While often complex, at its most basic both racism and sexism are mechanisms used by rich white men to deflect resentment of their entitlement & privilege onto groups that have spent years, decades trying to combat the prejudices they have confronted.

Their very success makes them a useful target of mis-direction when the entitled are looking to shift the blame for poverty, lack of opportunity & social exploitation.

The only really dangerous minority are the rich!

joseph Stiglitz's new report for the G20 (sadly the link from the Guardian is to an insecure URL) points out across the world, that:

'the richest 1% captured 41% of all new wealth since 2000, while the bottom half gained just 1%. On average, someone in the global top 1% became $1.3m richer; a person in the poorest half gained $585'... which as Stiglitz also points out isn't an accident but a choice by the world's political & business class(es).

Meanwhile in Switzerland, the Young Socialists proposal to impose a 50% inheritance tax on estates above SFr 50mn (£47mn) to use funds for climate amelioration measures, was rejected in a referendum.

On one level perhaps its no surprise, but even in a country as rich as Switzerland one has wonder how many voters would actually be impacted?... which means the rich have convinced them that 'harming' ultra wealthy families is not a good idea - implied blackmail?
