Jennings on foreigners
From Australian Human Rights Commission:
We welcome Australia’s one millionth refugee under the Government’s humanitarian visa pathway.
This moment celebrates a new beginning for refugees and their families who are forced to flee from their home countries in search of safety. People arriving under this program receive support from world-class settlement services and their contributions to Australia in every field are immense. They are doctors, athletes, lawyers, mechanics, baristas, neighbours and friends. Like more than half of the Afghan Women’s Soccer team who now call Melbourne home.
While we celebrate this achievement, we must also acknowledge that parts of our immigration laws and policies continue to raise serious human rights concerns. Australia has obligations under international human rights law to ensure dignity, security, and equality for all.
Let’s keep working toward a future where every person seeking safety is treated with fairness and respect.
