Avi Lewis with Rachel Gilmore on youtube:
"We live in a country where a political party can get 36% of the popular vote and have a majority government with almost complete power with few checks and balances. And so obviously first-past-the-post has polluted our own feeling about our franchise, about our democratic participation in elections.
We have a phrase in Canada, " I held my nose and voted for X or Y candidate."
This is toxic; it means people feel ashamed of their vote. They feel ambivalent about it. They feel that it's pointless because they can't vote their conscience for a party they agree with without fearing that that will contribute to the worst thing happening.
So people vote defensively.
This increases cynicism and the need for #ProportionalRepresentation is so fundamental because we're starting to lose our faith in democracy in Canada. #NDPleadership
