Even pushing free wiki software would be a win over a proprietary platform.
But yes, escaping commercial platforms is a critically important idea, and the first step to #selfhosting.

Yes, but Ghost is a big improvement over Substack, and it is a very mature product with the ability to scale to high end user's needs, and with the necessary integrated subscription payment functionality.

@mastodonmigration Bluesky allows someone to host their own data via the PDS. The relay itself can technically be self hosted as well although it can get pricey. Regardless it's technically federated as well just not on the ActivityPub fediverse.

Agree, but it's a heavy lift. Most of the 'thought leaders' like Heather Cox Richardson and Paul Krugman make their livings now on Substack. They could switch to Ghost, like Molly White @molly0xfff (https://www.citationneeded.news/) and Dave Troy @davetroy (https://america2.news/), but it would take real fortitude. They would need to summon the courage of their convictions.

After I called one person out they switched to Ghost and said it was very simple.

@mastodonmigration this is also true of your Mastodon account. Maintainers die or dissappear, Instances go down. Make regular backups of your Mastodon account!
