If everyone was refusing to provide official IDs to verify their identity and age on social platforms, and just let their account rot there unused instead, we would soon see platforms themselves starting to advocate against these invasive laws to recover their users.

Just saying.
They need you more than you need them.
Stop complying with invasive requests.

@Em0nM4stodon I haven't been asked for ID to verify my age on any websites or accounts. My understanding is it's mostly for "mature" content, especially of a sexual nature.

As a gray asexual, if a fourteen year old can't see it, I don't want to.

It's also invasive, but for me it's mostly the above.

@Em0nM4stodon The moment fb asked me my ID card or passport to verify an account I had made I just gave up... What are they supposed to be to ask for this kind of data? To verify what? And I even dislike it when I am asked about my phone number... Why on earth do people casually give away info like that? "I don't have anything to hide" is not even an answer....

@Em0nM4stodon In addition, everyone should block their platforms and tracking solutions via DNS filters and chase the email addresses into the spam filter.

@Em0nM4stodon MS just told me when I turned on my Xbox in the first time in forever that I need to either submit a photo of my ID or let AI scan my face to confirm my age or I'll lose access to 'social features'.

Okay? I've never once thought "Let me turn on my XBox to see what the person I played Forza with 10 years ago is up to"

@Em0nM4stodon || After almost 10 years on facebook they demanded new pictures of me cause They didn't know if I was a bot or not. If they are that stupid . . . But then there is always facial recognition programs. I really wonder how many pics they wanted of me to prove that I'm real. The kicker is that I have been Minion online since the mid 80's. 😂 🤣 😂 🤣

@Em0nM4stodon My story: I changed my FB pw (done regularly over the years) but this time FB required 2FA. Seems I'd done it but no one ever asked so I forgot and deleted my 2FA. When FB demanded it, I tried to restore my 2FA but FB has to ok it. Neither FB nor 2FA has a human to fix this. Now FB wants a 180-deg selfie of my face for ID (I don't even use my own photo on FB). See Auschwitz Memorial on social media: that's what the Nazis did to prisoners--profile, front, & an angle. No way.

See, this is exactly why age verification is stupid. I don't know where you are, but at least in the U.S.—and most places, as I understand it—a kid 13+ using the Internet is perfectly legal with only the obvious exceptions. That's exactly how it should be. Let's just call it what it actually is. It's not that they don't want kids to have access to things they shouldn't have access to. It's that they don't want kids to have access to Wikipedia or anything else like it, or any search engine, or any news outlet. They want kids completely unaware of anything they haven't been taught in school. That way they're easier to control as adults. I read the newspaper when I was a kid. According to them, that made me dangerous as an adult. I hope they're right, honestly.

@ulveon@derg.social replied  ·  activity timestamp 2 months ago

@Em0nM4stodon@infosec.exchange it is not so simple because of network effects. For example, Discord holds you hostage, but it's not just a personal decision. Your friends are on Discord. And if you don't comply with the rules of the platform, you will never talk to them again.

As such, you become isolated from them.

The real problem here is we have allowed for-profit megacorps to own your social graph in a way you cannot escape to any alternative contact method or platform.

Yes, you could, for example, stop using Bluesky and go to Fediverse. But you'd also have to pull in your social graph into Fedi. And generally, you are not going to be very successful in convincing even a majority of the people you follow to not only move over, but also post on Fedi with the same frequency.

The battle is lost before it begun.

@ulveon

I didn't lose a single true friend from Discord when I deleted my account. We'd already exchanged phone numbers and/or email addresses and/or real names, on purpose. "We" meaning myself and exactly three people. I had absolutely no problem getting a hold of exactly three people from Discord. I talk to all three of them on Signal now. I also lost a lot of so-called friends, most of whom probably wouldn't help me move if their personal vehicle happened to be a U-Haul and I happened to live next door. Was anything of value truly lost? Do you want friends or do you want "friends"?

@Em0nM4stodon @the@ulveon I left Twitter before musk took over and I left reddit and while I miss them sometimes I don't really want to go back, and they're making that decision easier and easier every day. We're at the point where the network effect is literally the only hold to have on us, if everyone uses their services and better Alternatives at the same time then their power will shrink to nothing. It's on either or I don't know why people necessarily frame it that way. Like yeah you should probably stop using the ones ran by outright Nazis but if you're not willing to go that before we get at least make it easier for other people who are ready to leave for good to do it
