Today I joined Indivisible Valencia County’s #NoKings protest, where I was invited to speak about the relationship between civil rights and anti-tyranny, and then to introduce the “ICE isn’t welcome here” signs that assert businesses’ rights to exclude ICE from private areas unless agents have a valid judicial warrant. It was a privilege to visit another part of #NewMexico, less populated and redder than Santa Fe but where the protest was vigorous and well-attended. 1/

I was so moved that hundreds of people turned out in a county of 80,000 that has trended more and more red. #NoKings #NewMexico. After events on the green at a park, the crowd flocked to a nearby main drag. It took me over two minutes to walk the line and video. Here are the clips. Do have a look. 2/

I shared the speakers’ dais with NM Senator Harold Pope Jr. the first African American ever elected to the NM Senate. His remarks were excellent, focused on the theme that in a democracy power flows up from the people, not down from any one person. (More about Sen. Former Speaker of the NM House Senator Michael Sanchez spoke, wearing a cap that said #Chicago. He repeatedly referenced the people being disappeared from the streets there and in Portland and LA, saying that he stands with all the people of those cities. #NoKings #NewMexico 6/
Friends have been telling me about the energy at #NoKings in Santa Fe, and I’ve had the chance to look at photos from protests in Boston, Philadelphia, and New York. I’m glad those cities have the crowds they do, but I will remember this protest in Valencia County for showing that away from big, generally liberal cities ordinary Americans are fighting fascism in our country. 7/7
