The Gray Lady Is Dead

The largest mass demonstration in modern American history and hardly a mention from AG Sulzberger's New York Times. That tells you all you need to know about this country's supposed paper of record.

@mastodonmigration @janeadams NYT did mention it - “thousands” of protesters. All the news that’s fit to print or something.

Yes they did. The post says 'hardly' mentioned it. By minimizing coverage they actually do more damage, because they disguise their nefarious purpose.

@mastodonmigration @janeadams I was agreeing. They made a point of minimizing it, and went to the extra length of pre-minimizing by sharing their “we don’t measure crowd sizes do they even matter anymore LOL” article yesterday.

@mastodonmigration To be fair, there were some valuables taken from the Louvre, and there really is not room for all the news of the day on a website, so you have to make trade-offs 🤔🤔🤔

@mastodonmigration

The entire staff of the NYT spent Saturday coming up with a euphemism for the shit Trump imagined dropping from his fake fighter jet on every American who protested against him.

Sulzberger could have saved a lot of time and money if he'd sent two reporters to Tillamook, OR, and asked the patrons at the saloons in the center of town what all that brown liquid was that went flying from nozzles pointing away from them.

The gray lady was stillborn. It supported genocides against natives, it went along with the American wars overseas in jingoistic supremacist fervour, Vietnam, Afghanistan, Iraq and more.

We do not have real news.

Donald Trump is right about one thing: we do have a problem with the news. But he misuses the term "fake news." He doesn’t call it out when the media ignores facts, tells half-truths, or even lies to the American people. Instead, he calls it "fake news" anytime he doesn’t like what’s being reported. By doing this, he distracts people from the real issue — that we often aren't getting honest, reliable news in the first place.

Real news tells the whole story — the wonderful, the good, the bad, and the ugly. It reports on politics without being political. That means it's not conservative, progressive, or even moderate. Real news doesn't give you its opinion — it sticks to facts and then shuts up, letting you think for yourself.

Real news is a public service — freely accessible to everyone, not just the elite. If the general public must pay a subscription (paywalls) to obtain the news, it's not really public, and it's not real news.

Real news doesn't take sides in war reporting. War is ugly. Awful things are done by all sides. A credible source shows the truth on every side, not just the one that fits a certain narrative.

Take the conflict between Israel and Palestine, for example. It has lasted decades. If a news outlet always portrays one side as righteous and the other as evil — that's not real journalism. Both sides have committed atrocities, and real news should say that.

What we often see presented as "news" today is actually a celebrity-type reporter interviewing another, with both simply sharing their personal thoughts and feelings about recent events. In other cases, news outlets choose not to report on certain events at all, tell only part of the story, or insert their own opinions — and sometimes they outright lie about what happened, which is propaganda.

We do not have real news in the United States of America.

@mastodonmigration All the major media is dead for democracy, as is most of the local TV news. The billionaire international cabal owns it. They only publish what suits their purposes. Apparently they are not done with spanky yet.
