#WritersCoffeeClub Oct 20 - What role does death (or undeath!) play in your work?

I write genre fiction and it is *surprisingly hard* to write a novel in which nobody dies; death tends to be trivialized or used to advance the plot and seldom traumatizes the survivors.

To which I say, to hell with that!

(Current WIP massacres with gleeful abandon, but it's SF set in a future with lossy mind uploading and replay, so they've effectively got mechanised reincarnation. Societal whackiness ensues.)

Small words, big potential rabbit holes : "LOSSY mind uploading".

(Though it does beg real questions of how many bits of measuremet and recording quantisation would be acceptable. 8-bit counter for each neuron-pair's connections, or 12-bit?)

@cstross reminds me of one of the very late stages in Accelerando where it's mentioned that the games that the reincarnated kid Manny is playing might kill someone if they get out of hand, which would be a nuisance for both him and his parents

@orman Oh, this time round I'm going for the throat. (imagine what our current oligarchs would do if they could check out for a few months in a brain-disassembly tank and wake up again in their six year old grandchild's body ...)

@cstross if it's lossy though? There's some tipping point where they'd be too scared of "dying" to try it

@orman It's lossy! it's part of the imperial mechanisms of repression. (This is not an optimistic future.)

Oh, surely Uncle Elon would go for a 14 y.o. grandson's body, so there was a usable penis in the meat-pack.
Though ... with his level of engineering competence, maybe not.
