This is a meitheal...
we used to do this in my church youth group for the elderly church members.
I remember my mom tossing this notion around with women in her circle, back in the early '70s. Nothing ever came of it, bc she tended to self-isolate, & the supporting social concepts weren't there. Would have done her a world of good, though, I suspect.
@cavyherd it's so deeply counter-cultural a LOT of people will struggle with anything that goes against the dominant narrative. That's why it's so important to share stories of people doing exactly that. It hacks our "social narrative" psyches that are tuned to only do things that are "what everyone else does"

Yeah, & she did stupid stuff because everyone else was doing the stupid thing, even though she •knew• it was stupid or dangerous. Bc being the social outsider was...just beyond her, I think?
@cavyherd I'm so reflexively a social outsider LOL it's hard for me to imagine *not* being that... but it's half personality, half practice. I figure everyone can get better at it, but I married a person who had to work *hard* at it (in some ways), so I get how it's fighting the social wiring to some extent.
safety in numbers, being socially ostracized can mean *literal death* so it's not like it's necessarily a *bad* instinct...it just has to be counterbalanced when it's self-destructive
@susankayequinn i have had something of a similar system but for bureaucracy in Germany. mainly for non-citizens.
bureaucracy isolates ppl to dominate them, so its daunting to be its target. but helping others do theirs has no psychological weight, its external and more functional. so theres a huge multiplication factor of the effort of the helper, in terms of how much relief the helped person feels. give a little and someone receives a lot.
my mind was blown when i first diectly experienced this.
@mousebot I believe it — having someone be a guide in almost anything (from learning new software or tech to dealing with complex forms and legal stuff) helps relieve the stress and increases your chances of success.
But also bonds people together! We *LIKE* helping each other, turns out.
Which is why the fascists are not going to win.

In my polycule, we are doing something similar: I babysit the child once a month and get a haircut by my metamour in return.
I guess in general you can do a lot of stuff with your family or your friend group, also bartering and such.
@amalia12 one of the themes I've been exploring in my solarpunk is expanding that essential unit of "family" — because I think it is the basic unit of resilience in our world and we need to strengthen it in the climate changed/fascism-tormented world we're facing. My stuff doesn't explore polycules per se but more how we expand what we mean by "family", esp in the novel I'm writing now, but my Nothing is Promised series has several variations on that theme.💚
