A nationwide internet age verification plan is sweeping Congress

Not good. The App Store Accountability Act is one of the 19 bills getting discussed at tomorrow's hearing, along with KOSA.

“We need to ensure that our kids are safe and parents have peace of mind from the moment their device is first turned on,” [Pinterest] CEO Bill Ready says in a statement. “By making app stores the center for age verification, the App Store Accountability Act sets a clear standard for youth online safety.” Companies like Meta, Snap, and X have also expressed broad support for the app store approach and applauded the federal bill when it was introduced.

@thenexusofprivacy the real headlines - we now want to collect verified demographic data of all the world's people so we can sell to shady data brokers and CIA for money

This verified data will then be used to target people more reliably

@mahadevank that's certainly some of it but it's also about censoring speech and attacking LGBTQIA2S+ people.

@thenexusofprivacy Make sure kids are safe by taking away everyone's basic privacy — including theirs.

What could *possibly* go wrong? Leaks aren't a thing, right? Should be fine.

Elizabeth Nolan Brown has an article in Reason leading up to tomorrow's hearing

"Can you judge the heat of a moral panic by the number of bills purporting to solve it? At the height of human trafficking hysteria in the 2010s, every week seemed to bring some new measure meant to help the government tackle the problem (or at least get good press for the bill's sponsor). Now lawmakers have moved on from sex trafficking to social media—from Craigslist and Backpage to Instagram, TikTok, and Roblox. So here we are, with a House Energy and Commerce subcommittee hearing on 19 different kids-and-tech bills scheduled for this week."
