Got to play the traditional Saskatchewan game of "where the hell do you think the road is" earlier today

A view looking along a road between houses, taken from inside a car. There's so much snow on the road that the only way you can tell it's a road is there is a gap between houses and trees, and garbage cans in 2 parallel lines along the road. The sky is white and the same colour as the snow on the ground.

a view through the passenger side of the windshield of a car on a road that is completely coated in snow. If you look carefully, you can sort of see where tire tracks are. Otherwise the road is pretty indistinguishable from the rather flat land on either side of the road. It's snowing and the sky is cloudy.

@sundogplanets I am a California kid - even worse, a southern California kid. I never saw falling snow until I was 20 years old.

It took me a while to realize that when driving on frozen water that something was different.

(My wife is from Minnesota and she has a different perspective on frozen water.)

We have property in New Hampshire so I have since learned things like freezing rain is more than simply very cold water, that when the 37F alarm goes off in the car it is time to slow way down and pay serious attention", and that one can sink a ship in the depths of those seemingly innocuous salty-water puddles on the streets of downtown Montreal. (And don't get me started about when we were very stupid and tried to do some XC skiing at -37F [actual] in Jackson Hole.)

On the other hand, our California Sierra Nevada in winter does instruct one about extremely deep snow - as much as 800 inches of it - and avalanches.

@sundogplanets lol, In Upstate New York there used to be a road that in certain conditions we had remember how the road twisted and where to avoid the ditch. Fittingly called "Freeze Road"

@sundogplanets lived most of my life in Wisconsin shoveling, and driving in its long snowy winters. I know the feeling.

@sundogplanets There should be a name for the latitude line where you go from ‘large investments in road clearing equipment’ to ‘snow driving is a requirement to live here’

@sundogplanets a slightly different game, but the recent Seattle rains have had me playing “Where do you think your lane is” on several highways, particularly around some road construction with constantly shifting lanes.

@sundogplanets Also being played in Ireland, especially around the coasts today. We have a big storm #StormBram and high tide with storm surge. Plenty of roads underwater: some walls down, and houses/businesses inundated.

In West Texas, we don't waste much time worrying where the road is. Even on a hot, sunny afternoon, it's no biggie if our jacked-up main-battle pickups wander through flower beds, mail boxes, kiddie pools, chicken coops, whatever. Yee-haw!!! It's just a matter of your philosophy of life. 😉

@sundogplanets hereabouts, in the fall they put colored sticks just outside the tarmac so one (especially the snowplow drivers) can see where the road is... https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schneezeichen

Viennetta roads: all the layers and mess, none of the ice cream and chocolate 🤗

A sliced Viennetta ice cream cake with a suspiciously neatly cut cross section visible. The center consists of tightly packed layers of vanilla ice cream and paper thin chocolate, with 3 layers of oscillating ribbons of ice cream on the sides and a thick layer of chocolate down the center of the top.

It makes for interesting sledding conditions.

Depending on slope, good for avalanche condtions too.
