If folks in small cities and towns can’t assemble and protest Republican Fascism, the U.S. will never be rid of it.

@heidilifeldman Funny how some people who don’t pay the money they already owe are still allowed to hold events.

@heidilifeldman @waltwooton This is an important issue to raise. It’s concerning when local governments make it harder for people to protest, especially on issues as important as this. The idea that cities are charging such high fees for protests definitely seems to limit free speech. How do you think communities can push back on these barriers?

@heidilifeldman Fees must be nominal, content-neutral, and cover only objective administrative costs like processing. (see Forsyth County v. Nationalist Movement 1992, Cox v. New Hampshire 1941, Thomas v. Chicago Park District 2002).

Also for fun context, watch “The Trial of the Chicago 7”.

@heidilifeldman So that's what they mean when they say "freedom isn't free"!

@heidilifeldman I have an idea - protest anyway. Why are 'we' asking permission from any city, state or federal government agency to protest? Isn't that the definition of civil disobedience? Isn't one of the tenets behind protest to disrupt the status quo? Good grief.

@heidilifeldman If the police don't allow organized protest, disorganized protest is the only alternative.

And ooooh boy, that's not a cat they can get back in the bag once it's out.

The city's illegal demands have made for excellent publicity for the event itself, at least 😁

@heidilifeldman I mean MAGA had to pay for all those Jan 6 rally permits and exclusive US Capital building tour fees to cover police overtime, insurance, and expenses so… yeah.

I think the saying goes: Freedom ain’t free.

Remain in your designated free-speech zone or face indefinite detention for acts of terrorism against the all powerful commander in chief.

Capitalism FTW.

@heidilifeldman

question: can they stop people from "spontaneously" congregating and then protesting?
