@FediTips Mind a question? How much money do someone need to maintain a fediverse server? Let's say only Mastodon and Diaspora, as the latter is having fewer servers. Would a VPS work? or do you need a full machine?
It's about 5 to 10 euros or US dollars per month for the smallest server through managed hosting, where they do all the techy stuff for you. For example https://fedihost.co/pricing and https://masto.host/pricing have price lists.
If you're using a VPS or a home server you could possibly do it more cheaply but you would need to do a lot more work.
I don't know about Diaspora, especially as its development seems to be minimal nowadays 馃槥 (Diaspora hasn't had a new release since 2024)
@FediTips Oh, it's not expensive. Let me ask a couple of friends if they want to start one with me (thinking about moderation, rather than on money).
Yeah, it's cheaper than people realise. Moderation is the biggest task, definitely.

@FediTips I have been boosting your posts but also mentioning feta tips on other sites where I'm trying to recruit people away from corporate social media and over here. Sometimes it works. The Fediverse is confusing, but knowing that someone is there that will help you and give you hints makes it a lot less intimidating.

@FediTips so I'm new here and it's kind of confusing being around here? I feel like everything is kinda slow and I'm not sure if it's because I'm bad at finding topics/servers I'm interested in or if Mastodon is kinda of a small community.
Ok. Got one for you. Using the web interface, is there a way to get a static alt text description that can be copy/pasted for "kinetic" media?
Static pictures have an [ALT] button, but music and video don't. You'll get it on hover(maybe not with music?), but it goes away when you unhover. Can it be made "sticky"?

Different interfaces and apps may display it differently however, it's up to each client to decide what it does with the alt text.
