The protagonist in Chris Hadfield’s novels, Kazimieras Zemeckis, is a Navy test pilot that loses the sight in one eye due to a bird strike but continues flying a in a civilian aircraft until he’s medically cleared to fly NASA jets.
I wonder if Commander Burrows was the inspiration?

There you go. He says Burrows was proud to be the inspiration for his main character in the Apollo Murders series.
