online pseudonymity, such as real-name policies, age-verification policies, and Chat Control proposals, isn't just a banal fight to keep using silly nicknames online. It's a battle for democracy, for civil liberties, and for human rights.

Meta removes ICE-tracking Facebook page in Chicago at the request of the Justice Department.
@AssociatedPress reports: "Earlier this month, Apple and Google blocked downloads of phone apps that flag sightings of U.S. immigration agents, just hours after the Trump administration demanded that one particularly popular iPhone app be taken down."

#Google, #Meta, Microsoft, any of the tech companies who provide "portals" to news and content, scrape this content and shove it in a feed that they have control over (obstensibly based on your "habits" and "preferences"). The portal keeps the $ad.revenue$ they pad the content with. The news agency: $0 unless the viewer clicks-thru.

Gretel Kahn of the University of Oxford's Reuters Institute spoke to representatives from The Logic, @thetyee, IndigiNews and The Rover about how things are going, who gets the money, and where things stand with Meta, which decided to remove all news for Canadians rather than pay up. “If companies like Google and Facebook want to play that role in being a trusted information source and they want people to come to their platform, trust it and be doing good things with circulating information, I don’t think it’s a crazy idea that they should be expected to pitch in funding journalism,” said The Tyee's Jeanette Ageson.
