In German #folklore, churches were one of the most direct links to the supernatural for most people, for it is from there where God's blessings flowed to the community. Accordingly, there were an abundance of folk tales associated with them:
- Omens and signs which led to the founding of the church building at a particular spot. For instance, a certain construction site might be beset by accidents and the materials would always turn up elsewhere until the builders would get the hint.
- Omens which gave hints to the future, if you visit the church on certain holy nights - for instance, if you visit the church during the night of the New Year, you would see a parade of people who were destined to die the next year.
- There is a rich mythology about church bells who would fly away on their own or sink into lakes if they were not properly blessed.
- The Devil would show up in church and kill or abduct people who misbehave, such as by chatting during the sermon or play cards during mass.
- On certain nights of the year, there would be ghostly masses where the deceased members of the community would gather, and sometimes one of the living would stumble into them.
- There were also certain magical rituals that would allow the mage to spot all witches in the congregation, as they would be sitting backwards.
And many further tales. If you are a #ttrpg worldbuilder, you might also contemplate what kinds of myth and folklore surrounds the temples and other places of worship in your world!
