My impression is that the posts I make about more technical topics tend to get the most interaction here on the #Fediverse. I don’t often post about my daily work as a software developer, but I truly wish decentralized social media will succeed. In my view, that will only happen if non tech-savvy people join... and stay.

I have a wide range of interests: science, philosophy, society, history, politics, cinema, music, and so on. Yet, I often feel it’s hard to find people here who focus on these areas.

Take #science or #journalism, for example. Many scientists and journalists have joined Mastodon at some point, but when you visit their profiles, you often see that they haven’t posted in years.

Should we blame them for deciding, say, to move to #Bluesky instead of staying here and talking mostly to the dominant (tech-oriented) group? I don’t think so.

I’d really love to meet and exchange ideas with more people interested in these topics from different perspectives, especially beyond the tech world. That’s something I enjoy doing in real life too, in a society whose language I’m still learning.

"One of the big ideas of this piece is that keeping the internet protected, keeping the internet, the way it works in an unfettered way and preserving interoperability and so on has become the slogan or the rallying cry of these huge companies that are using their position as centralized services or networks to say, 'We are protecting that. If you come at us, you're destroying the internet,' and that's just not... So assuming that and accepting that is assuming this false narrative," says Knodel.

Hey, folks who occupy the spaces of #tech, #opensource, #decentralization, #homelab, etc. - and avoidance of the surveillance state and/or activist circles - I could use some thoughts on this.

I have a group I am working with, who has a dedicated anti-google homelabber who wants to host matrix, jitsi, cryptpad, and a whole host of other nifty things locally for the group. I admire his dedication! But I am threatmodelling, and it feels to me that if all our data is sitting in a box in his living room, while we're free from corporate surveillance (if we take the correct precautions), we're still subject to a whole host of issues:

- People with guns show up and take the box of data
- He never checked his backups and we have no data
- He hates us now and is holding our data hostage
- He got hit by a bus and no one else has the keys
- He lost his job and all viable income and can't afford to maintain the infrastructure
- He got bored with it and isn't updating software and security
- He became a snitch and handed information over

I am curious how people mitigate this in their own lives.

I am also curious what other issues might arise that I've missed - what questions you'd ask about a person's set-up to feel comfortable using it.

(FWIW, I don't have any reason to think he's going to be a snitch or hold shit hostage; I do worry that he gets bored or busy or tired of the expenses without asking for help, because I've experienced that before)
