Taste of Honey. Boogie Oogie Oogie (12"/LP version)

I make no apologies for including Taste of Honey's disco classic here (it also appeared in the Disco posts), its a joyous bit of dance music. Janice-Marie Johnson & Perry Kibble offer an infectious arrangement with trilling guitar riffs & a bass solo with a great rhythm arrangement. Of course disco was big in the mid to late-70s, so here it is.

Grace Jones. La Vie en Rose

Grace Jones hit the big time in the early 1980s, but this earlier semi-Latin torch song remains a treat. The latin shuffle underpins Jones signature singing style (partly in French) with some great jazz-inflected instrumentation. The extended LP version is an atmospheric tour-de-force & features some wonderful piano playing. Altogether a smokey back room classic.

David Bowie. Fame

There's so much David Bowie 70s output to choose from but this is a personal favourite from one his greatest albums (Young Americans). The funk groove (inspiring a James Brown homage) backs a classic Bowie vocal (with lyrics co-written by John Lennon) & backing arranged by Luther Vandross. It a classic groove that still packs a punch. If you like this there's also Golden Years, of course.

There's so much David Bowie 70s output to choose from but this is a personal favourite from one his greatest albums (Young Americans). The funk groove (inspiring a James Brown homage) backs a classic Bowie vocal (with lyrics co-written by John Lennon) & backing arranged by Luther Vandross. It a classic groove that still packs a punch. If you like this there's also Golden Years, of course.

Mott the Hoople. All the Young Dudes

Mott the Hoople's signature song, written for them by David Bowie is a stone cold classic. From the sing-along chorus (wave your hands in the air), to the sparse production, glorious grungy guitar playing & build/release structure, its sooo evocative of the early 70s (well for me at least). Mott never equaled this anthem but one timeless classic record is enough...

When new wave (re)discovered black music, the immediate result was Blondie's (now disco classic) Heart of Glass. A driving rocky-disco rhythm relentlessly backs Debbie Harry's semi-whimsical vocals, and perhaps clearly exemplifies the difference(s) between British punk & US new wave at the end of 1970s. Its mash-up of punk & dance sensibilities wold be pretty influential.

Carly Simon's depiction of Warren Beatty's self-absorbtion is a classic musical character assassination, backed by a great groove (with backing vocals from Mick Jagger), which builds to a crescendo. From the burbling bass at the start the lilting stop-start groove offers a great foil for Simon's vocals, and includes one of the great sing-a-long choruses of all time.
