Small salal plants growing in the gravel beside a highway. Salal has evergreen, thick and strong leaves, winter-hardy; here ice crystals form around the rim of each leaf, leaving the centres free. A few dead leaves on a broken stem in front do not grow ice crystals; only the live leaves do.
