I am perturbed by the framing of the #TrumpTariffs against #Canada that I regularly see in the #Press, both domestic and foreign.

Specifically: "Canada and the US have been locked in a tariff war"

No, the US unilaterally, illegally, and with no rational justification imposed tariffs (functionally sanctions) on Canada, who was forced to respond.

Then there's this:

" The Trump administration has justified those tariffs by claiming a lack of co-operation on stemming the flow of illicit drugs like fentanyl. Canada denies that, noting about 1% of US fentanyl imports originate in Canada. It has also brought in new border protections and a "fentanyl czar" in recent months in an effort to address Trump's concerns. "

#Canada / #MarkCarney needs to start responding to the ridiculous #fentanyl claim by pointing out all drugs and guns coming into Canada from the #US / #USA.

We #Canadians all know this from experience, but #Americans are ignorant at best, delusional at worst, about their negative impact on the rest of the world.

This is quite the two paragraphs:

" Retaliatory tariffs "haven't seemed to have had the kind of impact that we would hope for", British Columbia Premier David Eby recently told Bloomberg. "

Yes, David, this stuff takes time. However, it is clearly having an impact, first with consumer facing goods like alcohol. Canada also targeted intermediary goods which take more time to have an impact.

" On retaliation, Prof Fen Hampson, a professor of international affairs at Carleton University in Ottawa, said: "The Americans have escalation dominance here. So you want to be smart about it." "

This is true, but Canada has the advantage of biding its time as well in the kinds of goods it exports.

Given the looming #TrumpRecession, it would be awful if Canada imposed export tariffs on raw and resource goods like energy, softwood lumber, steel, aluminium, etc. and used the revenues to prop up those industries while adding to the US Economic hurt!
