As someone who studied Mass Communication in college, I am absolutely shocked by the little media coverage of the AI slop video published on social media by the U.S. president... where he puts on a crown, gets on a jet & proceeds to drop massive quantities of fecal matter on protestors of the No Kings day.
Had this happened 10 years ago it would have been front page news everywhere.
Are we so desensitized by his undignified behavior + AI slop that nothing shocks people anymore?
@_elena I heard about it in European news. But my spontaneous thought was: He provokes with his shit to become number one in the news and let people forget what is much more important: reporting about the protests, the millions on the streets against him. Nothing better to make a #narcissist angry: don't report about every of his farts. Report about resisting him, also in #socialMedia. Don't become an #echoChamber of #fascism and #fakes.
My impression is that the posts I make about more technical topics tend to get the most interaction here on the #Fediverse. I don’t often post about my daily work as a software developer, but I truly wish decentralized social media will succeed. In my view, that will only happen if non tech-savvy people join... and stay.
I have a wide range of interests: science, philosophy, society, history, politics, cinema, music, and so on. Yet, I often feel it’s hard to find people here who focus on these areas.
Take #science or #journalism, for example. Many scientists and journalists have joined Mastodon at some point, but when you visit their profiles, you often see that they haven’t posted in years.
Should we blame them for deciding, say, to move to #Bluesky instead of staying here and talking mostly to the dominant (tech-oriented) group? I don’t think so.
I’d really love to meet and exchange ideas with more people interested in these topics from different perspectives, especially beyond the tech world. That’s something I enjoy doing in real life too, in a society whose language I’m still learning.

Decline of privately-funded science journalism in the age of Trump.

"Science journalism has been fragile for many years now: Outlets like National Geographic and Wired have undergone layoffs. Others, like Sapiens, have shuttered. The environmental publication Hakai Magazine shut down last year when its funder, the Tula Foundation, withdrew its support to focus on research efforts, for example (the magazine has since joined forces with bioGraphic). A few years earlier, the U.K.’s Wellcome Trust pulled the plug on its long-form digital science magazine Mosaic."

AI slop is threatening journalism by churning out clickbaity versions of original stories, capturing web traffic, and destroying readers' trust in media. NiemanLab's Ben Paviour takes a look at how it's proliferating, with the help of Google.

“It’s sad, but I’m also really proud of the #PressCorps that we stuck together,” said Nancy Youssef, a reporter for #TheAtlantic who has had a desk at the #Pentagon since 2007. She took a map of the Middle East out to her car.
It is unclear what practical impact the new rules will have, though news organizations vowed they’d continue robust coverage of the #military no matter the vantage point.

Many of the reporters waited to leave together at a 4PM deadline set by the #Defense Dept to get out of the building. As the hour approached, boxes of documents lined a #Pentagon corridor & reporters carried chairs, a copying machine, books & old photos to the parking lot from suddenly abandoned workspaces. Shortly after 4, about 40 to 50 #journalists left together after handing in badges.

News outlets were nearly unanimous in rejecting new rules imposed by #Defense Secy #PeteHegseth that would leave #journalists vulnerable to expulsion if they sought to report on information — classified or otherwise — that had not been approved by #Hegseth for release.

Dozens of #reporters turned in access badges & exited the Pentagon on Wednesday rather than agree to government-imposed restrictions on their work, pushing journalists who cover the #US #military further from the seat of its #power.

In May 2025, Google began to pay CA$100 million a year to media outlets in order to be exempt from Canada's Online News Act. Gretel Kahn of the University of Oxford's Reuters Institute spoke to representatives from The Logic, @thetyee, IndigiNews and The Rover about how things are going, who gets the money, and where things stand with Meta, which decided to remove all news for Canadians rather than pay up. “If companies like Google and Facebook want to play that role in being a trusted information source and they want people to come to their platform, trust it and be doing good things with circulating information, I don’t think it’s a crazy idea that they should be expected to pitch in funding journalism,” said The Tyee's Jeanette Ageson.
