Hey cool, I got invited to give a talk at a conference and they will let me switch to a remote talk rather than just un-inviting me! That hasn't happened in a while. (Conference organizers, please please PLEASE continue to have remote options, it's really stupid not to.)

@sundogplanets Not to mention ableist AF not to. Botany Society of America has even made their disability group at conferences only an in-person thing, FFS.

@ml There are SO MANY reasons to not travel to conferences! And it makes me very frustrated that so many conferences don't offer any kind of remote attendance anymore. That's a particularly bad move though, oof.

@sundogplanets @ml I think part of the reason is that, for many conferences, the “hallway track” is as interesting as - or even more interesting than - the talks themselves. If folks attend virtually, the value of that decreases, and in turn so does the value of the conference.

Not that I don’t agree on wishing for more remote options… but there are definitely conferences I have attended solely for the chance to get together with folks in person, so I also see the flip side of the coin.

@thomasareed @sundogplanets Again, it's not like it's impossible to have social opportunities and chance meetings online. It's up to how the conference is planned and designed and that is where so many ableists in academia have failed.

@sundogplanets I suppose I ought to see if I can submit an article about this. God knows I've microblogged about it often enough on Twitter and here.

It's so tied in with ableism and capitalism.

I attend maybe 1 conference a year at this point, and I always try to find one I don't have to fly to. Some times of year are just impossible for me to travel with farming and family commitments. This one overlaps with planting/milking/end of school, so it would be REALLY hard for me to attend. I'd also have to fly, which means it has to be a pretty incredibly good conference and/or include other collaboration in the same trip, or I just won't do it.
