Whenever you hear "ban for kids" on the internet, read in reality "ID collection by a sketchy third-party company that will definitely use it or leak it or both for every adult."

Because that's what this truly means.
Also, it doesn't even help the kids.

I tend to think "not suitable for kids" as equivalent to to "tobacco causes cancer". If it's not ok for kids, it's not suitable for anyone.

Yeah yeah, there are stuff not intended for kids, but we've had libraries full of erotic literature for centuries, readable by any toddler, and that seemed to have worked alright.

@Em0nM4stodon As former kids, we should remember all the ways we effectively circumvented age restrictions placed on us. Kids ain't dumb.

I'm thinking this is a meme that goes back to the 1950s, at least.

"Won't someone think of the CHILDREN??!?!?"

@Em0nM4stodon Beyond not helping kids, it actively hurts them. It makes it so the only stuff they can access on the internet is the worst drivel.

What I find baffling, is that people on a global scale, do not go on the streets, literally march on the streets, to tell their governments that this totalitarian movement on a global level needs to stop, otherwise we will stop the governments...

@Em0nM4stodon I mean, terrorism was used as an excuse for mass surveillance. It's good that some people were concerned about the privacy implications but majority of the people didn't give a fuck.

Snowden was deemed a "spy" by the current US president back in fucking 2013 ! And I guess most people just tolerated that shit and now here we are, lol

There were some thoughts pardoning the guy recently but some people in power are opposed to it of course, lmao. I just got my info from Wikipedia.

@Em0nM4stodon Puts everyone at risk, even the kids so truly nobody wins besides an authoritarian government who believes in privacy for some (themselves and fellow high-value individuals) and none for others.

the worst part is everyone acts surprised when the "secure" verification vendor gets breached. like yeah, centralizing millions of ids with a company motivated by profit is definitely the move. kids still find vpns anyway.

@Em0nM4stodon Life would be so much easier if people just used @Taler . The issuer of the document could verify the age of the users and they could just anonymously pass this verification to each platform that needs age verification.
