Grow Your Own Services ❄️

I've tried to put together a playlist of videos about self-hosting, you can watch at:

🌱 https://fedi.video/w/p/jmffEzZSCEbmtp2QdrRPXD

The playlist uses the broader definition of "self-hosting" including home hosting, managed hosting, VPSes etc. I don't know if there is any other collective term for all these?

If you know any good relevant PeerTube videos I'm missing, let me know 🙂

@homegrown I was trying to answer a similar question for https://consumerrights.wiki/w/Self-hosting and eventually decided that broader sense works better for the structure of the article anyway.

Besides, a large chunk of the benefit from self-hosting is software compatibility and transferability, and you get that regardless of where the software is running, so long as it's a computer you can access.

@dside

That's the thing, as long as you have a downloaded copy of your instance database, you can always set it up on another provider if your original provider goes down.

This even works for Fediverse instances, the Fediverse connections will remain intact even if your provider disappears, as long as you store backups of the database locally.

Home servers are wonderful, but VPS or managed hosting are good too 🙂
