He was also interested in the arts. In the lesser known ”Of the Affinity between Music, Dancing, and Poetry”, Adam Smith analyzed how the art forms are connected. His conclusion was that rhythm was foundational: ·       Rhythm organizes sound in music ·       Rhythm organizes bodily movement in dance ·       Rhythm organizes meter in poetry Smith thought it was likely that these art forms historically were performed together. Still, music and poetry could exist independently, but dance usually needed music because of the requirements of rhythm. Music and poetry could be combined into vocal music (songs). The idea of division of labor found in economics was something Smith wrote about in The Wealth of Nations.
