My favorite vocal jazz album of all time.
Abbey’s voice cuts me to the absolute core, and this album is perfect for a pensive Friday afternoon spin.

Anna Woolridge (her real name) as an incredible singer, actress and activist. She was married to Max Roach (who drums on this record), and she had a remarkable 60 year career.

I remember exactly where I was when I first heard this album.
I was in a record store in NY (probably in the Village) around 2000 or so when I lived there, and the gentleman who owned the store had this playing.

Unfortunately, he wouldn’t sell it to me, and it took a good decade after that for me to finally find a pristine vinyl copy.

For those of you unfamiliar with New Math, this would be an EXCELLENT place to start.

I’ve expressed my devotion to New Math’s 1984 album Gardens. That is a phenomenal album, & the only album released under the New Math name.

THIS wonderful compilation is a collection of early singles, as well as some demos & other unreleased material.
It’s a fascinating listen if you’ve heard Gardens; you can really see the growth from where they started up to when that album came out.

After Gardens, the band would go on to change their name to The Jet Black Berries in 1984, and make another STELLAR three records, before reforming & doing another in 2010 with a new singer (we don’t count that one 👎).

An amazing band who were able to do #punk , #powerpop , #garage , #newwave , & #psych rock.
Amazing band.
