Cold weather in Florida is pushing back the Artemis II launch | @theverge
What a wild looking satellite.
FInally, the NRO declassified the JUMPSEAT mission, which had signals intelligence satellites in Molniya orbit starting in 1971.
Enter the Dragon 🐉🥋
Here it is – my new JWST image of the young protostellar outflow system in Cassiopeia called HH288, aka The Dragon Jet.
We discovered it in the 1990s & the NASA/ESA/CSA JWST reveals stunning new detail, including several new jets crossing the main dragon 🙂👍

On this day, forty years ago: 28 January 1986.
I was working on my astronomy PhD in the terminal room at the Royal Observatory Edinburgh.
Someone came in & told us the awful news. After so many launches & astronauts, we’d grown blasé & didn’t pay much attention anymore.
That changed in 73 seconds on that cold day & we learned again that space is hard.
I still remember their names:
Onizuka, Smith, McAuliffe, Scobee, Jarvis, Resnick, & McNair.
Ad astra, STS-51L Challenger crew ✨
The Challenger disaster is the first major world event that I can remember from childhood.
40 years ago today.
Dick Scobee, commander
Michael J. Smith, pilot
Ronald McNair, mission specialist
Ellison Onizuka, mission specialist
Judith Resnik, mission specialist
Gregory Jarvis, payload specialist
Christa McAuliffe, payload specialist, teacher

Such an awesome send off for CSA Astronaut Jeremy Hansen!

A recent result from the Climate Change Initiative (CCI) #SeaIce project I happen to co-lead for the European #Space Agency.
Stefan Kern (University of Hamburg) investigated the accuracy of #SeaIce Concentration data obtained from an old US satellite: Nimbus-5 (1972 - 1977). This gives some confidence in sea-ice data from before most #ClimateData starts (1979).
You can read a bit more about the ESMR data itself here:

Scientists have known about the Ring Nebula for nearly 250 years, and they’re still learning more: This time, a glowing bar of iron has caught their attention. Read more from @ScienceAlert:
