I think about this guy every time she sells a popsicle in -10 C weather
@monicarooney ah, yes. #Toronto.
Last week I went out on Queen Street, in my parka, snow boots, hat, hood, and gloves.
I passed a pair in conversation, walking along the sidewalk, and I had to turn around to ascertain what I'd seen:
One person was in winterwear. The other was in a shirt, cutoff sweats (shorts), socks and sneakers. Only.
😲😖
Over the next year, I'll be riding every passenger train in #Canada. (Starting today, when I board The Canadian from #Vancouver to #Toronto.)
I'll be sharing what I see and learn in my HIGH SPEED blog:
On very cold days like today, I ask my friend who runs a popsicle shop to let me know if she sells any. She has every time I’ve asked. #Toronto #SoVeryCold
Something incredible is happening. Passenger rail, the most sustainable form of long-distance travel, is coming back to #Canada.
We have 49,000 kms of tracks.
But many of the 6.6M Canadians living in remote, rural, and northern settings have few transport options—particularly as inter-city bus service has been axed. For them, trains can be a true life-line.

Threads' inexorable enshittification is an opportunity: an opportunity to make the case for the Eurostack, an opportunity to improve the lives of millions of Europeans, and an opportunity to break through the walled gardens that keep the people we love stuck on legacy social media platforms.
When they did it to us, that wasn't progress. When we do it to them, it's not piracy.

My ebooks and audiobooks (from FSGxMCD, Tor Books, Head of Zeus, McSweeneys, Beacon, Verso and others) are for sale all over the net, but I sell 'em too, and when you buy 'em from me, I earn twice as much and you get books with no DRM and no license "agreements."

My late-night flight over the Midwest was particularly vivid — all those city streetlights reflecting off the snow. This is the Toronto area of Canada, with Lake Ontario to the right.

I mean, I know that sounds old-fashioned. But what can I say? Sometimes, the old ways are best.
If there's one thing Canada is good at, it's going to other countries and digging up all their wealth. America's tech giants have buried trillions of dollars they stole from the world, and we know *exactly* where it is. What's more, we can dig it out from here. No travel required!
Let's go get it.
Their margin is our opportunity.

FINALLY finished the 2025 Year in Review: Media Edition. It awaits MMH review and distribution.
Now to do the socials version of the injury and abuse tracker:
58 concussions
3 sprained shoulders
3 teeth knocked out
2 bruised orbital bones
2 bruised ribs
1 cracked collarbone
1 dislocated shoulder
1 bruised tailbone
1 torn rotator cuff
1 torn ACL
And many, many soft tissue injuries, mostly to wrists, arm, and legs, from overtight handcuffs, punches, and kicks.
They grabbed one person's hijab and pulled it so hard that it left bruises on their neck from near strangulation. They took another person's hijab when they arrested them and would only give it back in the cells.
(Edited because the capital B was making me twitchy.)

Never forget, #Toronto, you're not stuck in traffic because there are too many damn cars in this city. And this week you're not stuck because of record snowfall clogging roads. (As an aside, if you're complaining about snow on the roads, have you had a look at our sidewalks recently?) No, you're sitting there like a fool because of bike lanes.
Liberal MPP urges province to reopen Ontario Science Centre as roof withstands record snow
