Long day with lots to think about.

Hearing about what is happening in so many regions of Canada (and beyond) vis-à-vis Indigenous people and various governments and state agents was infuriating, but important.

I say again that it was incredibly touching to have people reach out to me as a non-Indigenous (North American) person and specifically request that I attend, as a result of putting in many years of legal support work at a wide variety of actions.

I hadn't thought about the breadth of actions I have attended, both as an LO and long before, but it really came home when one of the elders started to speak and I realized that I recognized her voice. From almost THIRTY YEARS AGO, when she was just beginning on her journey with healing and community.
What an amazing reunion.

Also, wtf.
How did we get to be "elder" age?
Still wrapping my head around the idea that my peers are now elders.

Of course I have many other thoughts about the day's activities and speeches, but I both need to ground myself and be mindful that this is one of the most heavily-surveilled communities in the country. Always has been.

Also: I love that Black and Indigenous people ALWAYS feed you.

A good day.
An important day.
Very glad I hauled my butt out on a cold, snowy Saturday morning to attend.

So deeply honoured to have been specifically asked to participate in today's Symposium for Land Defenders.

On a short, much-needed break after Mskwaasin and Dr. Suzanne Shoush just broke everyone's hearts speaking about their experiences with the Freedom Flotilla.

More later.

I saw Invasion: Christmas Carol down at the Assembly Theatre and it's great. Colin Mochrie was the special first night guest. The concept is a scripted show with one improv guest that causes chaos. I love the people in it (Jamie Cavanaugh, Liz Johnston, etc) and I highly recommend it!

What is that raccoon-torturing freak* going on about now?

*looks it up*

Me: Ooooooo will you look at that!

❝
Canada is a significant contributor of “lone soldiers” to the Israeli military. These soldiers come exclusively from Canada’s Jewish communities, as they are the only ones able to immigrate to Israel solely on the basis of their ethnoreligious background. As of 2021, about half of Jewish Canadians lived in Toronto. The Find IDF Soldiers project found that the average lone soldier is “most likely to have grown up in a Greater Toronto Area neighbourhood with a larger-than-average proportion of Jewish residents in what they’d describe as a Zionist household.” This is why the GTA has been selected as the geographical area for this project.

An institution was eligible to be included in this project if it and/or its head office is based in the GTA and it’s associated with at least four military members contained in the Find IDF Soldiers database. This project defines “associated” as an individual having attended, spoken or worked at an institution. This doesn’t mean the soldier represents the institution in any capacity or that the institution necessarily endorses any of the soldiers’ actions or statements.

Got any pro-tips on how to shut up my neighbour's barking dog?

They let the poor guy outside in the freezing cold and it just does not stop barking.

What's the kind, neighbourly thing to do? Throw a piece of steak over the fence?

#Toronto wants to be a Bicycle Capital. But it’s surrounded by a Ford Nation. ( #Ontario premier Doug Ford never met an SUV he didn’t love.)

City has a workaround: narrow (rather than remove) vehicle lanes to add 20 km of new bike lanes.
