So, I made some suet ornaments last year (and yes, those are dried worms in the round ones). I had to tie up the round ones with wire to secure them, but the stars I just poked a hole through the top, and that seemed to work fine. A bit more work than just making suet cakes (which is why I bought a couple of commercial suet cakes -- to have molds). I also made popcorn strings with cranberries and dried apple slices, and made up some pine cones filled with peanut butter and bird seed.

I probably won't all that this year (busy with making hand butter and other holiday gifts), but my feathered friends will still have plenty to eat! (Well, maybe I'll make up a popcorn string again...)

While staring up into a tree looking at the tawny frogmouth nest I’ve been watching for a while a stranger walking past told me about another group of them nearby. It’s not the first time this has happened, I’ve similarly bestowed knowledge of our tawny friends on others I’ve met while bird watching. Loving these birds is like participating in the world’s most delightful and cooperative treasure hunt

I was starting to wonder if I was imagining one of the nearby Tawny Frogmouths could be nesting given it’s quite late in the baby season (the other tawny families around here fledged a month ago) and I wasn’t seeing much change at the nest. Going out in the super hot weather to check was rewarded. I was delighted to meet new local muppets!

"🚨 Black Friday Break-In at Ashland ABC Store 🚨
Suspect Apprehended After Liquor-Fueled Rampage
On Saturday morning, Officer Martin responded to an unusual call at the Ashland ABC Store. Upon arrival, she discovered the “suspect” had broken in, ransacked several shelves, and then… passed out in the bathroom.
The suspect?
A very intoxicated raccoon. 🦝🥃
Officer Martin safely secured our masked bandit and transported him back to the shelter to sober up before questioning. After a few hours of sleep and zero signs of injury (other than maybe a hangover and poor life choices), he was safely released back to the wild, hopefully having learned that breaking and entering is not the answer.
A big shout-out to Officer Martin for handling this chaotic scene with professionalism and good humor. Just another day in the life at Hanover Animal Protection!"
