Oranges And Lemons
2020 UK 2xLP reissue
Last few spins before I head to Boston for a week, so I’m going for a few I haven’t heard in a while, starting with this one.
Oranges And Lemons reminds me of something I’ve wanted to ask for a while, but keep forgetting.
It is the second instalment in what might be my favorite 3-album stretch by anybody ever.
The run of Oranges And Lemons bookended by Skylarking and Nonsuch is so astonishing, that it’s quite remarkable.
For me personally, the only other run I can hold in the same regard is Radiohead’s stretch from The Bends to Kid A, The Cure’s from Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me to Wish, or the first three Sabbath albums.
Maybe other than Radiohead, I’d have to put the rest under the XTC stretch.
This was the 2nd XTC album I bought with my own $, & like Nonsuch, the first 3 songs are total master classes in pop songwriting.

Off to Boston in about 14 hours; returning to my homeland of Massholia for 7 days to do some hard digging and to see some friends.
So I’m gonna enjoy listening to some records until I leave.
This is probably my favorite compilation of ANY band’s body of work. I love The Only Ones so much, particularly Peter Perrett’s songwriting.
Their one big, instantly recognizable song aside (I first heard “Another Girl, Another Planet” via the Replacements’ cover version), they had MANY great songs, most of which are on Special View.
Killer band, timeless songs.
And kudos to Music On Vinyl for an excellent sounding reissue.

Music On Vinyl has reissued each of their first three studio albums over the past two years, and they’re all great, and readily available.

Because there may be a few #vintage computer nerds here 😄, here's a story of how #BBC#Wales handled the decision, for the 40th anniversary of #Eastenders earlier this year, to show the BBC1 globe ident as broadcast in 1985.
Instead of simply using a recording of the ident (which was only on screen for a few seconds) as other regions did, they instead managed to dust off & use the original signal generation hardware that had been sitting in a basement corner!

Your friendly neighborhood Vinyl Ape has long been a great admirer of Joe Henry. He is without question one of the greatest American songwriters of the past forty years, & his exquisite body of work proves it.
This gem of an album came out in 2009, but for some reason, didn’t get a pressing until October of LAST year?!?! That’s insane.
Anyway, there was no album I listened to more in ‘09 than this one. I’m of the opinion that it’s one of Henry’s best, which is definitely saying something.
Henry is a masterful musical storyteller, like on “Channel”, which has a beautiful piano accompaniment, and the opener “The Man I Keep Hid”, a woozy, boozy opener that you could picture Tom Waits doing.
By far one of my favorite vinyl purchases of the year.

A bit of an obscure one, from an all-female post-punk band from Vancouver.
Self described as "Five politically conscious people who conduct ourselves in a politically conscious way”, this 6-song E.P. is really great.
Touches of Patti Smith, Television, Suburban Lawns, Slits, Au Pairs and about ten other things I can’t quite put my finger on.
As politically charged as they were, there’s a #psychedelic quirk to some of these songs, and dare I say, some are close to danceable.
Only 500 of these were pressed, so they’re not too common, but if you have a way to hear it; physically, streaming or otherwise, please do.
Pretty interesting stuff.

This is a more #psychedelic and rocking version of Eric’s Trip than previous efforts.
If you listen to “Sun Coming Up”, it sounds like a more mean and muscular Sebadoh.
They’re not a band I re-visit a lot, but when I do, I really enjoy it.
The Lou Barlow vibes are strong with Rick White. At least in this one, anyway.

David Berman was another one of those very troubled but very talented artists.
I love all six of the Jews records, but Tanglewood is the one I come back to more than any other.
It’s got one of the all-time best opening tracks in “Punks In The Beerlight”, as well as a long list of talented guest musicians.
Besides regulars Steven Malkmus and Bob Nastanovich of Pavement, there’s Bobby Bare Jr., Duane Denison (The Jesus Lizard), Will Oldham, William Tyler, and Paz Lenchantin.
And just on a personal note, every Jews album has a certain amount of sadness to it.
However, I cannot listen to Berman’s Purple Mountaintops album, which was his last.
It’s just a little TOO sad, knowing what we know happened.
A great talent who is greatly missed.
